The Shema is a Jewish prayer and affirmation taken from three biblical passages: Duet 6:4-6, Numbers 15:37-41 and Duet 11:13-21. The prayer affirms that the people of God understand that there is one God that commands our sincere devotion and love, and holds a requirement that we love our neighbor as ourselves.
When asked which is the first of all commandments (Mark 12:29-30), Jesus responded that the first of all the commandments is “Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord; and though shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength:”. He also added that the commandment was this, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself”. He proclaimed that there were no other greater commandments than these.
